How stablecoin payouts work, in plain English

If you run a business and the word "stablecoin" makes your eyes glaze over, you're not alone. The crypto industry has done a phenomenally bad job of explaining stablecoins to normal people, mostly because the people doing the explaining have a financial interest in making them sound more complicated than they are.
Here's the truth: stablecoins are simpler than you think, and they've quietly become the most important payment infrastructure innovation in 50 years. Let's break it down.
A stablecoin is a digital dollar. That's it. That's the whole concept.
Specifically, it's a digital token, issued by a regulated company, that represents one US dollar held in a bank account or US Treasury. When you hold one USDC (the most common stablecoin), there's a real US dollar sitting in a real bank account, redeemable for cash on demand.
When you send one USDC from your account to a contractor's account in Mexico, you're sending the digital equivalent of mailing them a $1 bill, except instead of taking a week through the postal system, it arrives in seconds. The recipient can hold the USDC, convert it to pesos at the real market rate, or send it onward.
The technology that makes this possible is blockchain, the same technology that powers Bitcoin. But unlike Bitcoin, stablecoins don't fluctuate in value. One USDC is always worth one US dollar. The underlying technology just provides the rails for fast, cheap movement.
The biggest stablecoins are issued by regulated US companies and financial institutions:
USDC is issued by Circle, a NYSE-listed public company. They publish monthly attestations showing the dollar reserves backing every USDC in circulation. Their reserves are held with major US banks and in short-term US Treasuries.
PYUSD is issued by PayPal in partnership with Paxos, a regulated trust company. Same structure: every PYUSD is backed by a real dollar.
USDT (Tether) is the largest stablecoin and the oldest, but has more controversy around its reserves and transparency. We don't use Tether at OwenPay for that reason.
When OwenPay routes payments, we're using USDC and PYUSD on regulated infrastructure. The "crypto" part is invisible to you and your contractor. They see dollars or their local currency. The blockchain is just doing the work of moving the value.
A bank wire moves through a network of correspondent banks. Each bank in the chain has to verify, debit, credit, and pass along the transaction. Banks are open during business hours. Different countries have different banking days. Compliance teams have to review international transfers. All of this takes 3-7 days under normal circumstances.
A stablecoin transaction moves on a blockchain. The blockchain is a globally distributed network that operates 24/7. When you send USDC, the transaction is verified by the network and recorded in seconds. There's no business hours, no correspondent banks, no separate compliance approval at each step. The transaction is final and irreversible within seconds of being sent.
For payments specifically, the relevant blockchain networks today are Solana and Base (a network operated by Coinbase). Both can process tens of thousands of transactions per second at costs of fractions of a penny per transaction. This is what makes the economics work at scale.
Bank wires are expensive because they involve many parties (sending bank, correspondent banks, receiving bank), each of which charges a fee. Stablecoin transactions are cheap because they involve essentially one party, the blockchain itself, which charges a network fee that's typically pennies per transaction regardless of amount.
The result: a $10,000 stablecoin transfer costs the same as a $100 stablecoin transfer, around $0.01-$0.10 in network fees. Compare to a $10,000 wire, which costs roughly the same in absolute fees as a $1,000 wire ($75-150) but is a smaller percentage. For small transactions, wires are catastrophic; for large ones, just expensive.

This is where the customer experience matters most. A contractor in Mexico receiving a stablecoin payment can do one of three things:
Off-ramp to local currency. OwenPay's infrastructure partners convert the USDC to pesos at the real market rate (not the bank's spread rate) and deposit it into the contractor's Mexican bank account via CLABE. The contractor sees a deposit in their bank account in pesos. They never have to know stablecoins were involved. This is the default experience.
Hold the USDC. Some contractors, especially in countries with currency volatility (Argentina, Turkey, Nigeria), prefer to hold USDC as a stable store of value. We give them an embedded wallet where they can hold their balance and convert when they choose. This requires no crypto knowledge from them; the wallet is built into the OwenPay app.
A mix. A contractor can take some in local currency for immediate expenses and hold some in USDC for savings. They control the split.
The point is that the recipient experience is configurable to what they want, not forced into a single mode. This is dramatically better than wire transfers, where the recipient has zero control over how the money arrives.
This is where most "stablecoins are the future" articles trail off into vague hand-waving. Let me be specific.
Stablecoin issuers in the US operate under existing money transmitter and trust company licenses. Circle, the issuer of USDC, holds money transmitter licenses across all 50 states. Paxos operates under a New York trust company charter. They're regulated entities subject to bank-like oversight.
Federal legislation has been working through Congress that would create a clearer national framework specifically for payment stablecoins. The GENIUS Act and similar bills have bipartisan support and are expected to pass in 2025-2026. This will provide additional clarity but stablecoins are already legal and regulated under existing frameworks.

If your business pays contractors, partners, or recipients across borders, stablecoin rails will be relevant to you whether you use OwenPay or not. The infrastructure is being adopted by major payment companies (Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal) and the cost and speed advantages will eventually force the industry to move.
